Opportunity Or Denial

Taking Choices,

We, here in Austin, Texas have taken steps to slow the spread of coronavirus, before seeing evidence with our own eyes of people getting sick and dying.
This community effort in slowing down and distancing is now completely supported politically.
I say that because they have shut the strip clubs.
They shut all bars and restaurant dining rooms yesterday, and that includes the politically powerful strip clubs.
I saw rush hour traffic getting a bit less last week, including last Thursday, it was notably decreased on my bike commute Thursday, but markedly decreased Friday, when they closed schools the last day before spring break.
That was a powerful Friday the 13th message.
Friday the 6th, they had canceled South By Southwest, the big signal flare.
The Friday evening traffic out of Austin was much, much less than the week before. Traffic this weekend was very light. I should not really call it "traffic" now.
I worked at People's Community Clinic Monday. I will no longer take Mondays off.
We were setting up the adult and pediatric patient flows for respiratory precautions, masks, gowns, gloves, swab-testing, cleaning the small set of rooms we are using for that, and isolating people to wait outside in chairs if they are going into that flow. I had no patients scheduled as I was point-man for the first kid (with suspicious and defensive dad) and first adult, then 4 more adults.
We discovered lots of things we needed to adjust, lots of kinks and catches, lots of expenses and limitations of supplies.   We are very short of test kits. We can really only test people with a high suspicion of symptoms of coronavirus, nobody who is asymptomatic.
We have lots of spring pollen allergies, some colds, still some influenza, lots of worry, and anxiety-patients are all worse than usual.
I did our first parking-lot visit yesterday, because it was so much less wasteful of resources than using a dedicated room and protective gear for a young mom, there for anxiety/depression, whose very active 4 y/o daughter had allergies and a little cough. The daughter hung out of the back seat window "I'm on top of the world", as I stood outside the driver's door with pen and paper, having reviewed the medical record first, and printed up a few pages for reference.
Tomorrow a team of us will go to the first outdoor tent clinic set-up, being completed today, where I used to do urgent-care work. We will see what we should take, and what we should modify, as we set up our outdoor facility.
All of this seems quite mundane, and it is a benefit to us, to be able to work out our procedures while things still feel mundane.
We have not yet had a positive test result at People's Clinic, though there were 10 confirmed cases reported in Austin yesterday, mainly because of when tests became available and the turn-around time on reporting. This morning there are 7 more confirmed cases here.

Returning to the community response, it has been wholehearted at all levels, as much as such a thing can be.
My marker as a bike commuter is the traffic.
Traffic looks like something well under 10% of usual. It feels like 5-7% of usual. It's just not "traffic".
Everybody in stores and public places ha been showing reserve in their body motions for a week, keeping distances, being careful how they touch things, and there are fewer in the stores, somewhat fewer.

There are a lot more people out walking as couples, walking dogs, walking with kids and riding bicycles in groups.
Most of Austin is far more spread out than Asian and European cities, so this is completely safe and sanctioned activity.
Here we see a hidden cost of high-density living, which community planners have been pushing for decades.
High density occupation is the perfect culture medium for dread contagion. If everybody goes outside the apartment in Wuhan, everybody is mingling in the street in close proximity. There are only some areas of central Austin with dense apartment blocks, of fairly recent construction. I'm concerned about those big, dense apartment blocks and dormitories.
Suburban layout is far safer for social distancing.
Vegetable gardening is the ideal activity in suburban quarantine, where you are good to walk the dog and ride your bike.
It's funny. All employees are now routed into People's Clinic through the vegetable garden I keep, into the downstairs kitchen-break area, where we get temperature screened before starting work. I intend to post to everybody to grab the sugar-snap peas and gobble them. Delicious, at their prime, and each one untouched-by-human-hands.

Here at home, the birds and pill-bugs have taken all of the cucumber sprouts I planted last week. I've just planted again, and planted some beans in there to be decoys for the hungry critters.
I hope it works.

A good epidemiological overview of the situation in the US. 3-4 months of social-distancing will mitigate impact, maybe more than the ultimate mortality. I am not personally optimistic about our being able to do more than that. I don't think we can stamp this out in America, before it smolders through all of society, but that is my personal opinion. I will do my best.
Total cases in Italy, UK, and Iran have been going up for 1 month (see above). South Korea, with great measures in place, has just stabilised after 1 month. The US, arguably, has bad measures in place. So I estimate 1-2 months of total cases going up.
Next, people infected start to recover, or die (1-7%). But new people get infected, so the curve becomes flat. The curve was stable for 1-2 weeks in South Korea and China, with good measures in place.
Then most people have been exposed. You either got it, didn't get it, got sick and recovered, or you're dead. So cases go down. Active cases in China have been going down for 1 month. But people are still dying, and have another 2-3 weeks to go.
Based on the above, I predict 3-4 months total.

NPR story seems to show that abstract concept of "threat" is more acceptable, and as the mechanisms to deal with it become closer and personal, more people retreat into denial of the threat. That's not quite how NPR spins this, focusing on political affiliations. I have seen lots of denial of need for personal change from people who feel affiliated with both dominant political parties.
Poll: As Coronavirus Spreads, Fewer Americans See Pandemic As A Real Threat
In the face of the coronavirus worsening across the U.S. and reordering the daily life of millions of Americans, fewer people view the pandemic as a real threat, according to a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll.
Just about 56% of Americans consider the coronavirus a "real threat," representing a drop of 10 percentage points from last month. At the same time, a growing number of Americans think the coronavirus is being "blown out of proportion."

"This is like a war", some human experiences from inside Italy, where there IS public health infrastructure, but it is overwhelmed by delayed response, and the aggressive spread of virus. (Don't you feel like checking out for awhile? A LOT of my coworkers decided to take this spring break week off. When did they decide that? I just heard about it Friday.)
This man gave his dying sister mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and stayed with her body at home for 2 days, because bureaucratic regulations did not allow the mortuary to come get her body. How does that feel?
“The reality is this virus is spreading like wildfire. Death is not certain, but the contagion is real,” said Luca Franzese, whose sister, Teresa, 47, died at home in Naples on 7 March.
“My parents are heartbroken, they are destroyed,” he told the Guardian
Teresa, who lived with her elderly parents, sister, brother-in-law and their two children, suffered from epilepsy but was otherwise in good health. A week before she died, she came down with the flu.

“My parents called her doctor but they refused to come to the house despite knowing she had a disability,” said Franzese.
“She went into a coma on 7 March, we tried to call the emergency hotline, they arrived after 40 minutes. In the meantime, I tried to give her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.”
Teresa tested positive for the virus postmortem...
It was only after he made an appeal for help via Facebook that a local funeral company eventually came to collect her body. But as with other coronavirus victims, she was buried quickly and without ceremony to mitigate the risk of infection posed by her corpse. Her parents, who have underlying health issues, tested negative for the virus, as did Luca and a nephew. The rest of Teresa’s immediate family of seven have tested positive.

Well, there's that...

'Terrifying' New Research Warns 2.2 Million Could Die From Coronavirus in US Without Drastic Action
"Only now is the White House coming out of denial and heading straight into saying it could not have been foreseen."

Oh, it even affects the ARMY? What about war. Does everybody just stop for 3 months to be safe?
NATO was on the cusp of initiating a massive war drill called Defender-Europe 20. The 40,000 solider war game would have included 20,000 US troops and accompanied by heavy weaponry but was called off on Monday amid the Covid-19 outbreak across Europe.

Paul Craig Roberts sees the end of global supply chains and profits and a return to more local economy. The parasitic financial institutions that built this ponzi scheme should net be bailed out, but nationalized, and the indebted citizens should be bailed out to allow a new economy to form. We need a start-over. All of us do.
For most Americans nationalization is a dirty word, but it has many benefits.  For example, a national health care system reduces costs tremendously by taking profits out of the system.  Additionally, nationalized pharmaceutical companies could be made more focused on research and cures than on profit avenues.  Everyone knows how Big Pharma influences medical schools and medical practice in line with Big Pharma’s approach. A more open-minded approach to medicine would be beneficial.

Jim Kunstler, who has long predicted a "long emergency", says Things Have Changed.
There will be economic roles and social roles for all those willing to step up to some responsibility. Young people may see tremendous opportunity replacing the wounded economic dinosaurs wobbling across the landscape. It’ll be all about going local and regional and making yourself useful in exchange for a livelihood and the esteem of others around you — aka, your community. Government has been working tirelessly to make itself superfluous, if not completely ineffectual, impotent, and rather loathsome in the face of this crisis that has been slowly-but-visibly building for half a century. Something old and played-out is limping offstage, and something new is stepping on. Aren’t you glad you watched all those debates?

Bernie Sanders has suspended his campaign. I think he is still on the ballots everywhere. Swiss-cheesehead Joe Biden is the DNC's choice.
Tulsi Gabbard is still running. I have to go sit in the corner now for saying that. She also proposed the $1000/month per adult legislation that is getting credited to Mitt-hedge-fund-Romney. He's just saying it's for one-month, though.

Treating At Home

Reviewing Our Situation,

I first had good enough information about the novel coronavirus to post some details and projections in Year Of The Rat Fink, 1/25/20  http://www.johndayblog.com/2020/01/year-of-rat-fink.html
That information was fleshed out to it's present form by 1/28/20 post, Viral Valentine  http://www.johndayblog.com/2020/01/viral-valentine.html

Viral spread has been keeping up with basic predictions of epidemiological models, and the US is set to have a worse time of this than Italy, though Wuhan had it worst of all. Each of us lives in a community, and some are reacting better than others. I have been pleased that Austin has reacted a little ahead of what I expected.
At People's Community Clinic, I have been forwarding information and discussing it with other doctors for over a month. Tomorrow morning we set up our new respiratory evaluation protocol, having already had a change in screening and flow for this whole past week. We could not test until Wednesday, though, with a 4 day turn-around, so... I expect a lot of news in Austin tomorrow, and further restrictions. I will know the whole community is on-board when the strip-clubs shut. Really.
My eldest daughter, Holly Day MD is a hospitalist in Internal Medicine at a major Texas hospital.
Thursday she volunteered to take all of the suspected "COVID-cases" on her hospital service. All arrangements are haphazard so far, and she has been forbidden to treat even sicker patients empirically with safe, and available medicines, until tests come back, which the San Antonio Health Dept. only runs Monday through Friday.
Holly is working very hard and long, is a patient person, voted "most compassionate" for all 3 years of her residency program. The obstructionism of the hospital bureaucracy, with injunctions against any patient care until given permission, with no mechanism or expertise to create permission, is a Catch-22 for her and for every patient with this virus, getting sicker, while awaiting a test result.
This is "normal". This is your vaunted "finest health care in the world". Take good care of yourself. Take vitamin-D, 5000 units per day if you have been taking it awhile, but 10,000 units/d until June if you have not been taking it and you are not an outdoorsy nudist or surf-lifeguard. Avoid crowds, especially indoors. Wash hands with soap and water before after touching things. Avoid touching people, things they touch, your nose and your mouth in creative ways.

Chloroquine phosphate disappeared from pharmacy shelves by early March, here in the US, after 500 mg dose twice per day for 10 days was recommended for coronavirus disease.
Here is today’s GOOD NEWS:
I just got information from Michael-the-communist that hydroxychloroquine/Plaquenil 200 mg twice per day, is just as effective in treating novel coronavirus, maybe even a hair better. This is available, used long term in some forms of arthritis and autoimmune disease, but would only be used short term for this.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0924857920300820
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/32150618
Good Rx Coupons show #60 of hydroxychloroquine 200 mg costing about $20 to $60 at area pharmacies. That would be 3 X 10 day treatments of 200 mg twice per day.

The scientific journal, Nature posted this article 11/12/15
Engineered bat virus stirs debate over risky research
Lab-made coronavirus related to SARS can infect human cells.
Editors’ note, March 2020: We are aware that this story is being used as the basis for unverified theories that the novel coronavirus causing COVID-19 was engineered. There is no evidence that this is true; scientists believe that an animal is the most likely source of the coronavirus.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) introduced H.Res.897 which provides for a universal basic payment to help Americans across the country weather the storm caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
“The coronavirus pandemic has created a threat to the health and well-being of the American people, as well as to our country’s economic stability. While some in Washington are focused on taking care of Wall Street, everyday Americans get left behind. That’s wrong. Instead, we must act swiftly to provide a temporary universal basic payment of $1,000 per month to every American adult to help them weather the storm created by this crisis. Taking care of all Americans will stimulate our economy during this downturn,” said Rep. Tulsi Gabbard. “I’ve introduced a resolution that prioritizes people so our economic relief is placed directly into the hands of every American, rather than getting stuck in bureaucracy or ending up in the pockets of big corporations.”

Extra medical capacity and contingency plans are costly liabilities; not allowed; they reduce shareholder-value.
A USA Today analysis of American Hospital Association (AHA) hospital bed data shows that if confirmed Covid-19 cases and deaths follow similar growth curves as in China, Italy, and Iran, there could be six patients for every existing hospital bed. This means that no hospital system in the US is prepared for a pandemic.

This is really unacceptable behavior among members of Mr Ma's social class. Can somebody inform him?
Thanks again, Michael-the-communist.

Jack Ma’s charitable foundation and his China-based company's foundation, the Alibaba Foundation, have also sourced and donated supplies to other countries being hit by the virus, including Japan, Korea, Italy, Iran and Spain.

People infected with novel coronavirus shed virus for up to 37 days, with a typical shed of about 3 weeks.
The drug lopinavir/ritonavir is Kaletra, a once daily pill mainly used to treat AIDS. The Lancet:
For survivors, the median duration of viral shedding was 20·0 days (IQR 17·0–24·0) from illness onset, but the virus was continuously detectable until death in non-survivors (table 2; figure 1). The shortest observed duration of viral shedding among survivors was 8 days, whereas the longest was 37 days. Among 29 patients who received lopinavir/ritonavir and were discharged, the median time from illness onset to initiation of antiviral treatment was 14·0 days (IQR 10·0–17·0) and the median duration of viral shedding was 22·0 days (18·0–24·0). The median duration of viral shedding was 19·0 days (17·0–22·0) in patients with severe disease status and 24·0 days (22·0–30·0) in patients with critical disease status.

Jet-setting schmoozers seem to be a vector for this virus. It's hitting the elite class faster than street-dwellers.
AUSTIN (KXAN) — There’s no word from UT yet regarding COVID-19 test results of UT President Greg Fenves, who started having a fever Thursday night, according to a UT spokesman. Meanwhile, some people who had contact with Fenves on campus Thursday continue to wait for any guidance from UT.
In a letter sent out to the University of Texas community Friday, Fenves announced his wife has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Trump tests negative (whew!), France and Spain enter lock-down, and other coronavirus headlines.

Hence, the question remains why the age distribution of cases is shaped so differently in Italy compared to South Korea. It has also been pointed out that the testing procedures for coronavirus in the countries are very different — Italy has predominantly been testing people with symptoms of a coronavirus infection, while South Korea has been testing basically everyone since the outbreak had become apparent. Consequently, South Korea has detected more asymptomatic, but positive cases of coronavirus than Italy, in particular among young people.

If you roll up to a drive-through COVID-19 testing center in South Korea, you might notice that safety procedures extend all the way to your car's air conditioning. You will be advised to hit the recirculation button so that if you're sick, you can keep your pathogens to yourself, in your car, and avoid infecting the medical personnel doing the testing.
The test takes 10 minutes at most. Results are texted to you, usually the next day. And it's free — paid for by the government.
Drive-through centers have helped South Korea do some of the fastest, most-extensive testing of any country. And while nobody is claiming that South Korea has defeated the outbreak, experts credit the emphasis on testing with reducing case numbers and fatalities.''...

A nation of 51 million, South Korea has tested about 250,000 people since its outbreak began on Jan. 20, with a daily capacity of 15,000. It has conducted 3,600 tests per million people compared to five per million in the U.S.

Just as Gov. Cuomo promised on Thursday, New York’s first coronavirus drive-through testing center opened Friday morning in New Rochelle, and is up and running, collecting samples from anxious New Yorkers in the Westchester County town that has emerged as a hot spot for the national epidemic.

New York will be the next Italy, but it doesn't have to be.
(Being like Italy is actually "aspirational" for any US city.)
Analysis strongly suggests that the NYC metro area has 5–10 days to quarantine the city or face dramatically overwhelmed hospitals, extremely high death rates, and a ruined economy.

Speaking of drive-throughs, this article looks at traffic congestion in cities with quarantine (Wuhan) or social-distancing and work-from-home, and other milder precautions. There is a big difference between what China did, shutting everything down and keeping everybody in their houses, vs the helpful measures being progressively instituted by the west. We can't assume we will get the same results, can we? Graphs of traffic congestion make this easy to see.
America has no real public health system – coronavirus has a clear run, Robert Reich
Instead of a public health system, we have a private for-profit system for individuals lucky enough to afford it and a rickety social insurance system for people fortunate enough to have a full-time job.
At their best, both systems respond to the needs of individuals rather than the needs of the public as a whole. In America, the word “public” – as in public health, public education or public welfare – means a sum total of individual needs, not the common good.

.The Pentagon announces "minimal staffing" and all soldiers confined to base.
Pizza deliveries may soon be curtailed, as well.
No mention of nuclear sub personnel having virus, or tank crews, or strategic bombers, or missile silo teams, or...

Michael sends this story about how the US military makes mistakes with full staffing and is now the unwelcome-guest:
Three US servicemen were wounded, along with two Iraqi soldiers, during daylight hours on Saturday when some 33 katyusha rockets slammed into al-Taji Base north of Baghdad. Two of the US soldiers were seriously wounded and are in hospital in Baghdad.
The rocket attacks were likely revenge for US air strikes on Friday that killed 5 Iraqi soldiers and security police and one civilian, on a base at Jurf al-Sakhar. Kata’ib Hizbullah announced that its fighters took no casualties at all at the base. Indeed, it appears to have been wholly manned by the Iraqi Army but that used to have Shiite militiamen.
The US intelligence about that base appears to have been entirely out of date, so that the Trump administration actually bombed its own Iraqi ally, the very troops it is supposed to be in Iraq training.

Will NATO grab that golden ring?
Defender Europe 2020 can not be cancelled due to corona virus
Although it would be better not to test the ability of NATO doctrines to withstand the modern virus.
And then what? Cancel? This makes no sense. Although many are already starting to support this idea. Currently on the Internet you can find many petitions for the abolition of the exercise. Under them are the signatures of thousands of Europeans.

Coronavirus isn't just causing humans to fight in the aisles of Target over toilet paper. Today in "signs of the apocalypse", hungry monkey gangs are also swarming and fighting - for food - on the streets of Thailand.
Monkeys in the country are usually well fed by tourists who visit Central Thailand, but visitors have plummeted
as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, which has hit the Asian region hard.
The animals shown in a video are reported to be two separate "rival gangs" that dwell in the city, according to the Daily Mail.
Half of the monkeys are said to live in the temple areas, while the others live in the city. The two groups don't usually meet but ended up doing so this past week.

New Safe Habits

Creatures Of Habit,

It's time to be an early-adopter of the new habits which will be the new normal.
Adopting for cognitive reasons instead of abject terror is the preferred course of action today.

This virus has a huge invisible leading edge of asymptomatic spread, so when you see it, it's already too late.
People shed it for days before they feel sick at all.
Young people and teens and kids can spread it for weeks and never get sick.
My son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter near Dallas, have a housemate, who got sent home from work  because a coworker's daughter got diagnosed with coronavirus. (We suspect not confirmed yet).
This is the kind of way this pops up.

This virus spreads by droplet nuclei in coughs and sneezes, and those can persist on surfaces for days when deposited by aerosol or touched by a hand.
The next hand can pick them up and take them to a mouth or nose, the viral public-transit-system.

I have no symptoms. I wipe my nose. I grab a door handle.
You come behind me, You eat a snack. You are infected.
Repeat-without-rinsing...

Washing hands before and after touching public things is hard. I wash before and after seeing patients and alcohol-swab my stethoscope.
How do I touch the knob on the sink?
I grab a paper towel first, unless the dispenser is not working right, which is often the case.
Then I touch the dispenser. OUCH!
I have found that a sturdy pen or highlighter will pull a lot of doors open if deftly manipulated.
I have been studying this, and you should, too. Study your hands, and everything they touch, and study each thing, and consider other touches it gets, and ponder work-arounds.
Share insights at meetings at work. This will be well received.
At People's Clinic we hand out pens and clipboards with paper questionnaires.
Oh, my those pens and clipboards get a lot of touches!
What to do, now? Working on best solution...
Give away all the pens and don't give clipboards? What about the sheets of paper?

We have to review all risks and benefits in new-pandemic-world.
New habits will need to persist for at least 2 years while this virus methodically infects 60-70% of all the local populations in every human community, everywhere.
Slowing the spread of infection down to a steady drip is the best we can do.
A lot of infections at once destroys a working community in a couple of weeks.
Then the biggest wave of sickness hits without a support system.

They closed a couple of schools for coronavirus cases in New York today, but it's just the Bronx.
Wall Street should be completely safe.

Caitlin Johnstone says:
The Great Repatterning Continues. Make Sure You Take Advantage Of It!
This is a level of disruption that the world hasn’t seen in generations. Normal things that had been a routine part of people’s entire lives are just not there for them now, whether it’s normal socializing, watching the basketball game, or buying toilet paper at the store.

This is a really good and extensive primer on the public health measures that each of us must institute and explain to friends and family and coworkers today. Good graphics of how social distancing works to reduce cases in real time.
Coronavirus: Why You Must Act Now

A truly bombshell and unprecedented accusation, underscoring that if Sino-US relations amid the broader crisis weren't already bad enough, they're about to crash much, much lower: China's Foreign Ministry spokesman tweets "it might be the US Army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan" — the widely acknowledged epicenter and origin point of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Personal Pandemic

Viral Incubators,

"Personal" is feeling the threat, getting sick, caring for a critically ill family member who is getting worse, seeing the loss of the life you know, and feeling fear that does not go away.
Sorry to be negative, but I'm working to channel the mind that will be in my body soon, the mind that guides a body in mortal threat. Denial is weakening in America, and urgency is taking it's place, Soon will come panic, then despair and capitulation.
Capitulation of the elites, as they go through the emotional dive-bombing is what could allow the obvious to actually take place. Bernie Sanders gets the Democratic nod, and props up Americans with public health, jobs that support families, and directions to new tasks to support society, rather than suck the life out of it for elites.
No fever screening test will work for novel coronaviruses, because there are days of shedding virus without any symptoms, before the onset of feeling bad. This means only huge regional quarantines will work, and for months, not weeks, and the viruses will keep spreading until 70% or more of people have had them. S-strain and L-strain novel coronaviruses are different. L-strain spreads faster and is more deadly. Our tests in the US, just released, with long report-waiting times, do not distinguish. It's sort of academic right now. If I test somebody in clinic this afternoon, I'll get a report next week. We will see numbers explode across the US this month.
Colleges are saying not to come back from spring break. Schools will likely do the same. This will extend into summer vacation, if it is to be successful. In Austin, I will know that a shift in consciousness among elite power brokers has happened when they shutter the strip clubs. Austin has full contact strip clubs with lap-dances. Fellas come from all over Texas for that. Owners have "political clout".
Drugs are of some help for sicker people, when the drugs are available. Chloroquine, a good old public health malaria drug is back-ordered to infinity in the US. Kaletra, and HIV drug-combination is found to be helpful. Remdesivir rights are now the property of the Peoples Liberation Army of China, and clinical trials continue.
It's not for us, brothers and sisters...

Shedding a lot of coronavirus while you still feel fine:

The USA, USA, USA is China on January 11, today.
The coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. could grow to be as serious as it is in Wuhan, China, Johns Hopkins University Dr. Marty Makary told CNBC.
“What happened in Wuhan could happen here. Why do we think otherwise?” Makary said, referencing the Chinese city where the new virus originated in December.
“Viruses don’t care about politics and they don’t care about location,” he added.

Cancel Everything. The moment of opportunity is Right Now.
This virus spreads faster and is far more deadly than the "Spanish Flu":
When the influenza epidemic of 1918 infected a quarter of the U.S. population, killing tens of millions of people, seemingly small choices made the difference between life and death.
As the disease was spreading, Wilmer Krusen, Philadelphia’s health commissioner, allowed a huge parade to take place on September 28; some 200,000 people marched. In the following days and weeks, the bodies piled up in the city’s morgues. By the end of the season, 12,000 residents had died.
In St. Louis, a public-health commissioner named Max Starkloff decided to shut the city down. Ignoring the objections of influential businessmen, he closed the city’s schools, bars, cinemas, and sporting events. Thanks to his bold and unpopular actions, the per capita fatality rate in St. Louis was half that of Philadelphia. (In total, roughly 1,700 people died from influenza in St Louis.)

UK Health Minister Tests Positive For COVID-19; Bernie And Biden Cancel Rallies: Live Updates

Alastair Crooke looks at the Middle east turmoil in coronavirus-pandemic-world:
And after the military dynamics, we are brought to the geo-politics and economics of the Corona virus.
The virus has brought an extraneous, sudden ‘shock’ to the real economy. The virus is not like seasonal ‘flu. It is much more infectious (the virus being in the throat, rather than lungs), and it propagates via cough and sneeze droplets that linger for many days on objects that others then touch. But unlike seasonal ‘flu, Covid-19 carriers may have the virus, but not have the disease (i.e. show no symptoms), which makes it hard to identify any chain of infection – or to take appropriate containment action. Medical experts, however, do not know the circumstances of Covid-19’s inception (presumed to be zoonotic, but lacking evidence for this); do not know its reproduction number; its fatality ratio; and do not know whether it is affected by seasons. It seems to have already mutated once, producing both a milder and a more lethal variant.
In short, anyone saying how long this virus will last simply is guessing.

It infected one-third of the global population, and killed between 50–100 million persons in Europe, North America and Asia.

Reset In Progress

Downhill Skiing,

The reset is underway. Which reset? All of 'em?
In the US we were assured by Ronald Reagan that "there are no limits to human ingenuity", by which he denied The Limits To Growth projections that global real economy would peak some time around 2015, and global human population would peak some time around 2050. That implies some very bad times for humans in the intervening time, which is now.
Reagan was a TV star who became president. He was a good enough chap, but the book still looks right.

Billionaires are not about to let votes change their system, certainly not at a critical time like this. Take the votes away from Bernie again and give them to Biden and Bloomberg. It worked for Hillary last time. Thanks Colleen.
The 2020 Massachusetts Democratic Party presidential primary was held on March 3, 2020. Election results from the computerized vote counts differed significantly from the results projected by the exit poll conducted by Edison Research and published by CNN at poll’s closing. As in the 2016 Massachusetts primary between candidates Sanders and Clinton, disparities greatly exceed the exit poll’s margin of error. Sanders won Massachusetts in the exit poll and lost it in the computer count.
The discrepancies between the exit poll and the vote count for Sanders and Biden totaled 8.4%— double the 4.0% margin of error (95% CI) for their exit poll differences. Warren’s and Biden’s discrepancies also totaled 8.4%, again double the margin of error (95% CI) for their exit poll differences.  These discrepancies replicate the total discrepancy of 8.0% favoring Clinton in the 2016 Massachusetts Democratic Party primary between her and Sanders. This time two progressive candidates exhibit the same discrepancies now favoring Biden representing the establishment’s choice.
Presidential candidates Biden’s and Bloomberg’s vote counts exhibited the largest disparity from their exit poll projections. Biden’s unobservable computer-generated vote totals represented a 16.2% increase of his projected exit poll share.

Solve problems yourself. Grow vegetables. Sidestep the machine before it collapses. Make it irrelevant.
A society can be likened to an organism. Its members are individual cells. Organisms survive not because one group of cells in the brain directs the rest. Rather, there is constant interaction and communications among cells, much of which bypasses the brain. This optimizes the odds of the organism’s survival. You put your hand on a hot stove, information is communicated from your skin and its nerves to the peripheral nervous system, not the brain, and the message almost instantly comes back: take your hand off the stove. If cells could only respond to directives from the relatively slow brain, the organism would die within minutes. Similarly, the illusion that huge masses of people can be controlled by a small group from the top only guarantees the eventual end of that small group’s control and perhaps the entire society.

Novel Coronavirus, the original S-strain and the more aggressive L-strain are released and spreading like wildfire, having jumped all the big waters and mountains from China to the wide world.
Most people dispute that this is a military creation, perhaps from fear of ridicule. The facts are that most of the work done on the S-strain showed it to be about 95% like a bat strain, except that the whole 5% difference was never seen anywhere before, and existed in the section that binds the ACE-2 receptor in human respiratory and digestive tracts.
That was no accident, and was never found in wild animals, because it was never there.
The second L-strain coronavirus, the more aggressive one, that caught China partying unawares has that same exact binding site and spike-protein that lets it reach out and touch us so effectively.
That site that makes it spread in people gets selected for success, is under selection pressure based on spread over time. Some areas are "neutral", not really affecting infectivity. The L-strain differs by 17% in a neutral area, compared to an S-strain.
That's huge in viral time. It's years of mutation and thousands of sequential hosts to mutate that much, but it came out a month after the S-strain, and it has the identical tissue binding sequences.
Here in Texas some people mount horns from a Texas Longhorn on the front of their cars and trucks. The rest of the vehicle is a different vehicle, but they look the same after you mount the longhorns.
That's what happened with S-strain and L-strain. Different viral test platforms, maybe from different national labs, or the same one, got the same attack-sequence mounted on them and set out attacking Chinese people in Wuhan.
Which sequence predominates in other countries?
S-strain is more prevalent in China outside Wuhan, but what about in New York?

New modeling from The Australian National University looks at seven scenarios of how the COVID-19 outbreak might affect the world’s wealth, ranging from low severity to high severity.
Four of the seven scenarios in the paper examine the impact of COVID-19 spreading outside China, ranging from low to high severity. A seventh scenario examines a global impact in which a mild pandemic occurs each year indefinitely.
But even in the low-severity model — or best-case scenario of the seven, which the paper acknowledged were not definitive — ANU researchers estimate a global GDP loss of $2.4 trillion, with an estimated death toll of 15 million.

$2.5 trillion in stock valuations disappeared from global markets this morning. That's different from GDP, right?

Charles Hugh Smith:
If the stock market drops 50%, that wipes out pension funds, 401Ks, and mountains of leverage.
In other words, the Fed has to save all the asset bubbles to save the real-world economy which is now dependent on the excesses of financialization that have enriched the few at the expense of the many.
Everyone with a pension fund or 401K invested in stocks better hope the Fed becomes the buyer of last resort, and soon, as once stocks crater 50% or more, there's no way to recover the $16 trillion that evaporated, or stop the dominoes from falling.

Moon Of Alabama is up to date and on-target:
Today the financial markets finally recognized the economic damage the novel Coronavirus will cause.
The price war in the crude oil markets which Russia initiated did not cause today's stock market fall but it also did not help. While cheap oil is supposed to be good for the economy the drop will also cause significant damage in the U.S. financial markets as the whole fracking industry in the United States is laden with debt and is now destined to be wiped out. Expect crude prices to sink to $20 per barrel as frantic overproduction and a drop in demand due to the virus coincide. Russia is well positioned to win this price war. Others are not.
It is the virus pandemic that causes the downturn in stock markets. But what makes the Sars-CoV-2 virus, as the novel Coronavirus is now officially known, so dangerous? The Covid-19 disease the virus causes is basically a flu though its seems to be one of the more severe kinds.
(More infectious and more fatal than the 1918-1919 Influenza)
But when a new viruses evolves everything is different. Our societies do not have a basic immunity against a new virus. Without countermeasures many more people will get sick during the first, second and third wave of a new virus onslaught than during a normal flu season. Health care staff will also get infected and must quarantine itself. Some health care workers will probably die. Hospitals will become overwhelmed and the health care system will break down just as it did in Wuhan, China. The breakdown of the health care system also leads to a much larger number of virus death than under a working health care system...
The current case fatality rate in Lombardy has now topped 6%. We know from China (ex Hubei province) that in a functioning health care system the death rate of Covid-19 patients is lower than 1%. It is not the virus that kills more people in Italy, it is an overwhelmed health care system.
(Consider that this may be L-strain virus in Italy.)
A health care system that is overwhelmed with Covid-19 cases can also no longer take care of regular cases. People with an acute heart attack, with diabetes problems, or kids who have fallen off a bicycle will find that the hospitals are full and unable to care for them.
The only way to prevent such a catastrophic development is to spread out the timeline during which the epidemic happens.
(Don't go out in crowds. Don't touch things everybody touches without gloves. Toss the gloves before opening your car. Go home. Take 10,000U vitamin D-3 per day until summer, unless your levels are already up to normal. Consider taking 1000 mg of vitamin-C 3 times per day when you spike a fever. Fever-Good, Tylenol-Bad.)
Today's market crash and Trump's ignorant and disastrous handling of the pandemic make it now less likely that he will get reelected. The pandemic also guarantees that the demand of medicare for all will become a huge winner.

NYC Mayor De Blasio says quarantine of the whole city "is a possibility"... Whaddayuz think?

Russia declares financial war on Shale Oil and Saudi monarchy. Russia can handle $25/bbl oil for a decade, indefinitely.
Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said that "considering the decision taken today, from April 1 of this year onwards, neither we nor any OPEC or non-OPEC country is required to make (oil) output cuts."
With global fears over coronavirus already severely impacting the oil market (down 30% since the start of the year), and with the Russians surprising oil ministers gathered at OPEC headquarters by suddenly abandoning a plan meant to keep oil prices steady, the biggest shock was felt by the Saudis, because as Bloomberg puts it, Putin has just effectively dumped crown prince MbS to start a war on America's shale oil industry.

L StrainCoronavirus

Doubly Threatened,

The new coronavirus information yesterday was that there are 2 strains, with different fatality rates. The original "S" strain continues to spread through China, where the data was collected, and causes fewer fatalities. It is less aggressive of a pathogen. The newer "L" strain exploded in Wuhan, and appears to have been responsible for most of the deaths there.
Of course we still don't know the real numbers, but most estimates are vastly higher than official numbers, and based on cremation rates.
These 2 strains are significantly different, and the rapidity of the arising of the very differently mutated L strain suggest that it entered the ongoing epidemic in Wuhan, and transformed it into a horror-show. The Chinese authorities may have been acting upon the milder illness of the first S strain wave for their early decisions, leading into Chinese New Year.
Of course I wonder what strains are circulating where in our world, but I also really wonder where that deadly L coronavirus strain came from.
The question of how this lab virus got into human circulation is still unsettled in public discourse. I do not believe pangolins got it from bats. This new information again brings up the question of "accident" or "attack" and it is now a 2-pronged question.
Whether the initial novel coronavirus S type was accidental or offensive, I really must favor the second L type coronavirus being an offensive attack.
The killer wave came at a particularly vulnerable moment, with China having set the defensive response way too low. The aggressor could be assured of deeper penetration and more damage, once the defense was set as mainly-propaganda.
How may China respond? To whom might China respond in kind?
(The article below carries on with the approved narrative that these strains are naturally occurring, but points out that "neutral site" mutations diverge by 17%, a vast divergence in regions of the genome, which are not subject to evolutionary selection pressure as viruses multiply and spread. This excludes a natural series of mutations as cause.)

Population genetic analyses of 103 SARS-CoV-2 genomes indicated that these viruses evolved into two major types (designated L and S), that are well defined by two different SNPs that show nearly complete linkage across the viral strains sequenced to date. Although the L type (∼70%) is more prevalent than the S type (∼30%), the S type was found to be the ancestral version. Whereas the L type was more prevalent in the early stages of the outbreak in Wuhan, the frequency of the L type decreased after early January 2020. Human intervention may have placed more severe selective pressure on the L type, which might be more aggressive and spread more quickly.

China Hints At Blackmail Over Pharmaceutical Exports, Would "Plunge US Into Mighty Sea Of Coronavirus"
China's CCP media mouthpiece, Xinhua News, has published a new article titled "Be bold: the world owes China a thank you."

It is time to revisit Turkey and Syria, and Russia, Iran Hezbollah, Israel, US, Greece, EU, and so on.
Not mentioned in analyses I'm reading is the spread of novel coronavirus in refugee camps and military forces. It must be rapid, but there is no testing reported. Eleni, in Athens sent this analysis, which is better than the others I'm seeing.
The conflict Erdogan envisions between Russia, Iran and Syria on one side and Turkey on the other would suit the US and Israel. They would be happy to see Presidents Putin and Erdogan sinking into the Syrian quagmire and Hezbollah losing more men in the Levant. Negotiations, intense battles and attempts to reshuffle the military situation are taking place behind the scenes. President Erdogan is trying to improve his military position on the ground before his meeting with President Putin in Moscow tomorrow Thursday- but to no avail. Stormy negotiations can be expected...
Turkey halted its direct bombing against Hezbollah and the Zulfiqar brigade. Iran and Hezbollah threatened to hit Turkey if the bombing continued. Close to 2000 Turkish officers and soldiers are now positioned, under Hezbollah and Iran’s ‘protection’, in 14 observation posts inside Syrian controlled areas, where they receive supplies locally. A meeting between the Iranians and the Turkish army and an exchange of messages took place between Hezbollah and Ankara, explaining that any clash between the two will bring the Levant and Turkey into a comprehensive confrontation that no one could win. The battle in Syria should not be against Turkey, and Erdogan needs to understand that the presence of his troops on Syrian territory is not acceptable...
Turkey wants to bring back the deployment of forces on the ground to where they were before the Idlib battle and is calling for the respect of the Astana agreement but from a weaker position. In fact, it is too late for that; deals have a short life in Syria! Ankara will have to accept the status quo and prepare to lose Idlib without further concessions in the Kurdish area. This does not mean Erdogan will accept and surrender without a fight all the Syrian territories he has occupied without a fight. The Putin-Erdogan meeting will probably not end all differences, and much may have to be postponed until the forthcoming Putin-Erdogan-Rohani meeting this month in Tehran.

Fistfights erupt in Turkish parliament closed session over Erdogn's adventurism killing Turkish soldiers in a vain cause.

Elizabeth Warren will drop out today.
(Liz Warren should endorse the "other woman of color", Tulsi Gabbard. Her revenge would be sweet and broad.)
The news has been confirmed by NBC. Warren only had 50 delegates, and it's likely many will side with Bernie Sanders, who has long since won the battle to be the progressive standard-bearer.
The big question now is: To whom will Warren give her endorsement? Will she swallow her pride, put the acrimony behind her and side with Bernie Sanders, whom she repeatedly touted as an ideological ally against the party 'establishment'? Or will Warren side with Biden, a move that would undoubtedly infuriate millions of progressives who will presumably follow Bernie leftward?

Don't Look Down

Teetering Over Abyss,

Alexander Aston, via The Automatic Earth:
The virus is a catalyst, something beyond our agency to control which is triggering cascading changes in a system that has been rotting for some time. As an archaeologist, if I found evidence of intensive and intersecting energetic, ecological and economic disruptions in society, what I would expect to find at the end of those stratigraphic layers is a new cultural phase.
That is, I would expect a very different kind of society and culture, albeit causally linked, from that which preceded it. Another way to frame this is that periods of systemic collapse and reorganisation generate new forms of social psychology, new narratives, beliefs and practices. A new epoch is here, and we will all quickly learn that we are very different kinds of people than we thought we were. Soon, things will start looking radically different from what we have known to be the order of things. States, institutions, practices and beliefs that once seemed permanent fixtures of our world will be swept away.
This may seem extreme, the momentum of history has not fully tipped us over the edge yet, which allows psychological space for defaulting to normalcy bias. The problem is that causality is not linear, and it does operate at singular scales. What we are experiencing has been building for decades, but the synergy of these causal processes, their true emergent effects are about to become fully apparent. The virus is a spark, not the cause, and it is breaking down the last reinforcing bonds holding the global system together. If the ruling class had not been debasing our societies and parasitizing their citizenries for decades, our social resiliency to this pandemic would be much higher. High energy production costs, low demand, and low consumption have been masked by systemic financial fraud.

As the machine breaks, it has to be kept limping along, before it can recreate itself.
Economy , "political economy", is our life support machine.
Checks-in-the-mail time, soon. Professor Steve Keen:
Frances Coppola makes the case for this in the general case of a financial crisis in her book People's Quantitative Easing (Coppola 2019). This power could be used now to stop a financial crisis happening in the first place.
The payment should be per capita—as it has been in the country that has already done this because of the crisis, Hong Kong. The payment there is HK$10,000, or roughly US$2,000. It does not need to be financed by the Treasury or by taxation: neither were used by the USA to support its $1 trillion dollars per year Quantitative Easing program. There will be no "debt burden for future generations".

I couldn't keep watching the Biden gaffe clips. Too many...
"Running Joe Biden for president is like making your dog wear a dress," Carlson deadpanned. "It may make for an amusing Instagram post, but it's wrong. You can see the confusion in the dog's eyes." ...
"Today, both Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar endorsed Biden. So did former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Beto O'Rourke," Carlson said. "These are party people doing the bidding of their corporate masters. There's nothing warm or sentimental about it. They're pushing a defective product on consumers and they know it. They're selling lawn darts."
Carlson believes the threat from Sanders is about "institutional control."
"The Biden campaign isn't about ideas, much less ideals. The Democratic establishment's only concern is institutional control," Carlson said. "That's where all of their power comes from. From holding together and running things. If the Democratic coalition breaks down, they are by definition powerless."

Tulsi Gabbard has a dlegate? No problem. We'll change the debate rules to keep her invisible.
So it’s unsurprising that the DNC felt comfortable striding forward and openly announcing a change in the debate threshold literally the very moment Gabbard crossed it. These people understand narrative control, and they know full well that they have secured enough of it on the Tulsi Problem that they’ll be able to brazenly rig her right off the stage without suffering any meaningful consequences.
The establishment narrative warfare against Gabbard’s campaign dwarfs anything we’ve seen against Sanders, and the loathing and dismissal they’ve been able to generate have severely hamstrung her run. It turns out that a presidential candidate can get away with talking about economic justice and plutocracy when it comes to domestic policy, and some light dissent on matters of foreign policy will be tolerated, but aggressively attacking the heart of the actual bipartisan foreign policy consensus will get you shut down, smeared and shunned like nothing else. This is partly because US presidents have a lot more authority over foreign affairs than domestic, and it’s also because endless war is the glue which holds the empire together.

Chinese recommendations on personally mitigating the effects of n-CoV-19 once diagnosed:
Fever Good, Tylenol Bad.
Take antiviral (chloroquine and others, when fever starts, not when pneumonia makes it hard to breathe. You could precipitate cytokine storm and shut down heart and lungs by waiting until then.
Special recommendations about re-infecting your lungs from your nose are included. How to breathe and cough at different stages of disease are addressed.
Not addressed is taking vitamin-D. Take 5000 units per day, unless you have not been taking any, in which case take 10,000 units per day for a month (or longer).

Deaths from this virus are highly stratified and impacted by age, medical problems, cold weather, highly infectios groups in tight spaces, and the sicker you get, the more likely you are to die. Kids basically don't die from it, but may spread it without seeming ill. South Korea is going to be the best-case-scenario. Iran may be worst-case-scenario.
World health officials said Tuesday the mortality rate for COVID-19 is 3.4% globally, higher than previous estimates of about 2%.

Iran frees 54,000 prisoners AFTER virus swamps crowded prisons. (It's ok, pretty few "confirmed-cases")

The Chinese viral lab that publicly released the n-CoV-2019 genetic sequence without prior approval in early January, was promptly shut down without explanation, and remains shut, hampering research. (Fear loss of narrative control?)

Angela Merkel complains that Turkey's Erdogan is slamming Greece and Europe with a human weapon of war refugees. (Erdogan has got to get these folks out of his country before they all get fevers and pneumonia, doesn't he?)

Researching Facts And Relationships

Exposed,

Professor Anthony Hall has undertaken a 5 part series to investigate broadly and deeply the origins of the 2019 novel coronavirus. I knew he was working on this project, but I had no idea how much work, and how excellent. Many of the sub threads in this long first installment are related to stories I have linked to in the past couple of months, but I am gratified that Professor Hall has really dug around under the floorboards of each story, to present what the strongest and weakest aspects are.
As shall be demonstrated, the Wuhan Institute of Virology is thought by some experts, including a prestigious group at the South China Technological University in Guangzhou, to be the probable source of the contaminant. As shall be demonstrated below, the Wuhan Institute of Virology and its outgrowth, The National Biosafety Laboratory, are thought by some to be integrated with more secretive sites where the military operations of China’s alleged biological warfare program are centered.
A focus on the kind of procedures that take place at the Wuhan Institute of Virology begs the question of whether an accidental viral escape from this agency forms the primary origin of the epidemic. Another possibility is that some sort of power play within China’s ruling elite might have led to the decision to create and release a bioweapon in the heart of one of the most heavily populated zones on earth.
Yet another possibility is that the Wuhan Coronavirus epidemic is part of some agenda of “hybrid warfare” by the US government against China. Speculation surrounding this scenario emphasizes that hundreds of US soldiers were in Wuhan in late October of 2019 for the World Military Games.

It’s not that testing is not available...It’s that testing is not ALLOWED...
...Here’s the other quote from the UC Davis email that I’d like you to pay close attention to:
When the patient arrived [Wednesday], the patient had already been intubated, was on a ventilator, and given droplet protection orders because of an undiagnosed and suspected viral condition. … On Sunday, the CDC ordered COVID-19 testing of the patient and the patient was put on airborne precautions and strict contact precautions.
Translation: for four days, every healthcare professional treating this patient at UC Davis was exposed to airborne transmission of COVID-19. And so was every healthcare professional at the hospital before UC Davis. Because the CDC refused to test this patient for COVID-19 in a timely manner, the doctors and nurses and technicians caring for this patient were put at risk...

The facts here are pretty clear. Patient comes in from another hospital on Wednesday, Feb. 19 – this is one week ago – already intubated and on a ventilator, and the doctors at UC Davis – who have treated other COVID-19 cases – IMMEDIATELY suspect COVID-19.
But the CDC refuses to test for COVID-19.
Why? Because it didn’t fit their “criteria” for testing. They didn’t know for sure that the patient was in mainland China within the past 14 days, and they didn’t know for sure that the patient was in close contact with another confirmed case, so BY DEFINITION this patient can’t possibly have COVID-19. No test for you!
This is “Don’t Test, Don’t Tell” and it is the single most incompetent, corrupt public health policy of my lifetime.

Run On Chloroquine

Thinking Prophylactically,

A post on The Automatic Earth yesterday included this link, which is incomplete information about the treatment of novel coronavirus 2019 with chloroquine phosphate, failing to reveal the dose.

That's OK. Let's wing it with the highest standard sustained dose in general use, the dose for amebiasis.
That is 500 mg twice per day for 2 days, then once per day for 2-3 weeks. It looks about right for the job.

Both local pharmacies I called here in Austin this morning say the wholesaler expects to have some on March 3
("I should gladly repay you Tuesday"). This online pharmacy says they have it, according to the online chat lady.
It costs about $15/tablet and you need a prescription to send in with the printed form.

I'm awaiting a call back from a human supervisor about getting a supply for the clinic.
I'd find it useful to have around, for sure.

Do take 5000 units per day of vitamin-D3, available over the counter and cheap.
Take 2 per day for a month if you have not been taking it, to try to get up into the normal range.

Here is the latest story about how to tell that this virus was created in a lab. There are more and more specific fingerprints of genetic engineering. Nope, the pangolin didn't get it from the bat and mutate it to infect humans.

UK National Health Service says what must obviously be true. In case of shortage of life support equipment, healthy young people will be prioritized over sick old people. Each hospital will have committee of "3 wise men" to decide priority.

Yesterday's news was that Japan, then Germany gave up on containment of cases and switched to damage control, since new cases were untraceable. Japan is closing schools, too. First "community acquired" case announced in US.

A Japanese tour guide, treated for the virus, recovered and tested negative, has become symptomatic again. It looks like this virus may go dormant, "play possum", as well as have a long and variable latency, and be spread by those who don't feel sick.

In June 2017 the World Bank sold about $450 million of pandemic bonds, that pay if there is no pandemic, but poor sick countries get the money if there is a pandemic. There are 3 tranches of these. No pandemic by this July means big money to big investors. Declaration (unavoidable soon) of pandemic triggers means poor, devastated countries get some of the money that is left after fees and coupon payments, already disbursed.
