Waking Up Poor, Hungry And Parched

Bleary Eyed,

Jordan Greenhall looks at Strauss and Howe's generational, "Fourth Turning" cyclic model of history, which Steve Bannon also propounds. The implications of this are used to interpret the actions of the Trump administration, which seem so mystifying all around.

Joe Brewer says "the information age is weaponized". He's right. The information we are swimming in is here to control us. Don't fall for identity politics. Get to real-work.

Colleen says this is the most important book she has read, explaining the real structure around the shadow box, in which we live.
The CIA as Organized Crime, How Illegal Operations Corrupt America and the World, Douglas Valentine
In the 1960s, William Colby, then CIA Director, gave Douglas Valentine access to the old-boys-club, expecting the gentleman's agreement not to divulge anything messy, to be honored. (I suspect Colby had been smoking some opiated Thai Stick before their meeting.) The result was this book about the CIA running heroin to fund torture, bribes and rendition in Vietnam and the "secret war" in Laos. The CIA tried to restrict this book repeatedly in the courts, which mainly delayed it. The rest of the world knows this first-hand.

"Uncharted territory", they say, and ramping-up faster than any of the models: 2016 saw the hottest global average among thermometer measurements stretching back to 1880. But scientific research indicates the world was last this warm about 115,000 years ago and that the planet has not experienced such high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere for 4m years.

The Global Famine Begins: The UN announces that the greatest hunger crisis since World War 2 is now in progress. ("We" made the world's people depend upon green revolution grains from vast factory farms, and upon wells draining ground water, and we took their natural resource riches in return... Henry Kissinger told Richard Nixon we had to get those populations down, or lose access to resources we would need. Condoms were not enough, I suppose.)

There is a sudden increase in the number of refugees reaching Greek islands off the Turkish coast. Thanks Eleni.

Greek public hospitals are failing to be able to provide basic services, which is not new, but is reported again, as last year's law extended services to those who could not pay, but could not provide any funding to go with it. More sick people in the sinking lifeboats... Thanks Eleni.

Turkey says the refugee-holding-tank deal with the EU is near collapse. This clearly implies a wave of suffering, frustrated and "weaponized" humans moving north into Europe.

("Nazi") Germany has rejected as many arms export deals to Turkey in the last 5 months as it did in the 5 years before that, due to concerns about totalitarianism and lack of human/civil rights.

Finian Cunningham on why North Korea appears so "irrational" in the western media. Thanks Eleni,
Despite Western media demonization of North Korea as some kind of crazy rogue state, the people there are not fools. They know from family histories the atrocious cost of American war. And they know that any nation perceived as weak by Washington will be bombed back to the Stone Age.

China "warns" the US to cease arms sales to Taiwan.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters tweets to President Donald Trump: "Get ready for impeachment" (Just how should we interpret this?)

Night And Day

Equinoxious,

WIkileaks Won't Tell Tech Companies How to Patch CIA Zero-Days Until Demands Are Met
(This sounds pretty bad, but what are the "demands". Hmmm, not mentioned. They might be righteous-but-dangerous, and that is not how Apple and Google do business these days. Notably, the CIA is not telling the companies, many colluding with it, how to patch these door-of-interception.)

Trump is Challenging the Whole CIA-Media Nexus; Nothing Like It Since JFK (Thanks Eleni)

Intel Chair: "No collusion between Trump and Russia; Leak is the only Crime"

A Single Bitcoin Transaction uses at least as much Electricity as a US household uses in 22 hours, down from 36 hours in 2015, but likely to rise again as mining for dwindling number of possible remaining numerical solutions. (The high cost of upkeep of this system is staggering. It's not for regular people; maybe central banks. It's actually fragile and depends on lots and lots of global infrastructure.)

Why Medical Care in America is so very wasteful of resources, and how to change that.
"Republicans and conservatives generally understand only half of the issue of administrative complexity. They understand only the part that occurs within government, especially the federal government. They do not perceive the bigger issue of the administrative costs of private corporations. The direct providers of medical care and equipment cost only a fraction of the health bill. A vast portion of the cost is added by layers of administration, marketing, and other overhead costs. Republicans would solve this by removing regulations. But this would not solve the problem entirely, because much of existing administration is dedicated to the objective of maximizing profits for all the many corporate players in the health-care system, rather than delivering health care efficiently. When I grew up in small-town America, many things were different. Consider just three: First, most hospitals were owned by municipalities (as in my home town) or religious charities and were administered locally and not for profit; second, most drugs and medical devices were generic, not patented; and third, advertising prescription drugs was banned."

Brexit 2 year countdown will begin March 29, when PM Theresa May Triggers Article-5

"Nazi, Nazi, Nazi..." Turkish PM Erdogan does not yet have the votes to change Turkish Constitution to give the President (him) near-dictatorial powers, which he has already been"enjoying", if you can call his recent tortured-human-existence in the pirhana-pits-of-Power "enjoyable". Solution is to call European countries who don't support his (non-Nazi) totalitarian strivings the dirty-word. It's bound to work, right?

Paul Craig Roberts on Apartheid Israel: UN says same thing as Jimmy Carter and Truthful-Head rolls. Thanks Eleni
"In his book Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid published 11 years ago, President Jimmy Carter raised the question whether Israel had stolen Palestine and excluded the rightful residents from their homeland. On March 15 UN Under-Secretary General and director of the UN’s West Asia Commission Rima Khalaf published a UN report that also concludes that “Israel is committing the crime of apartheid.” By Friday March 17, Israel’s puppets, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, had forced Under-Secretary General Khalaf to resign."

To The Last Drop

Bleeding Turnips,

Professor Michael Hudson is a "Classical Economist", which went out of favor about a century ago.
The problem was that Classical Economics, from Adam Smith to (yes, him) Karl Marx, distinguished productive political-economy from parasitic rentier-capitalism. One was productive; the other erosive. That became unpopular as the parasites took control of politics and economy. We got "Neoliberal Economics", just "Economics", not "Political Economics".
Orwellian newspeak makes slavery into prosperity. Destruction of human lives, pension plans, and the environment which sustains us all, becomes "external costs".
The parasitic owners of this economic regime must externalize costs and "realize" profits.
Classical Political Economists now have to be called "Heterodox Economists", because they bring "externalities" back into the nice neoliberal model and mess it all up.
"About one third of the GDP is monopoly rent. One third – which otherwise could take the form of rising living standards. A century ago there were futurists who were writing about the future, Simon Patten and others, they all thought we would have an economy of leisure by now... But the opposite is happening. People are being squeezed, they’re having to work overtime. They’re struggling just to break even. They’re one paycheck away from missing a utility payment."

In Greece, people are giving up land passed down through generations of family, because they can't afford to pay the "rent" to the government, to pay to external creditors, who bilked the government, on behalf of Greek citizens. (Corrupt officials make corrupt deal and people of the country lose everything in perpetuity. The usual value-extracting neoliberal model.)

Amazon is going to destroy more American jobs than China, while selling Chinese stuff online, conveniently and cheaply. It's happening...

What "Britain" will be leaving what "EU" becomes a more tangled question, as Northern Ireland voting brings Northern Ireland suddenly very close to reunion with the rest of Ireland, which is an EU member. Scotland wants another vote at things, too. On the other side of the channel lie France, Italy, Spain and Greece...

Paul Craig Roberts, From Nuisance to Threat, The High Cost of Truth: As George Orwell said decades ago, “In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” This is the way the criminals who rule us see it, and it is the way their whores in the media see it. If you tell the truth in America, you are a purveyor of fake news and possibly a traitor.

Action On The Table

Hating the Menu,

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in South Korea on Friday that military action would be "on the table" if North Korea elevated the threat level. Tillerson said that 20 years of trying to persuade North Korea to abandon its nuclear program had "failed" and that he was visiting Asia “to exchange views on a new approach". The U.S. policy of "strategic patience" with North Korea has ended...

Trump says North Korea is "Behaving Very Badly" and blames China:

US Delta-Force, Seal Team 6 practices incursion into North Korea to Assassinate Kim Jong-Un.

Democrats expect recession. Republicans expect economic boom.

You may have heard allegations that the Obama Admin. Used British Intelligence to tap the phone lines at Trump Tower. (The NSA has everything. This is circus.)

White House formally apologizes to Britain for spying accusations. (Kabuki)

Senate Intel. Committee joins House Committee in saying that they have not seen evidence that Obama Tapped Trump. (Me neither...)

"The Deep State is About to Launch it's Revenge Against Donald Trump" ("Hoover = Great Depression; Trump = Greater Depression")
The Fed is the weapon, they say. This is a few days old. Things are funny with the Fed this week.

AUSTIN, Texas — A team of engineers led by 94-year-old John Goodenough, professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and co-inventor of the lithium-ion battery, has developed the first all-solid-state battery cells that could lead to safer, faster-charging, longer-lasting rechargeable batteries for handheld mobile devices, electric cars and stationary energy storage. (BINGO!)

Enlightenment Lies

Rehumanizing,

We were all born naked and human. What happened?
This article points out that the conceptual framework of our modern world is of the divorce between human-consciousness and all of the natural world.
We call that "The Enlightenment", which is nice, like saying "Department of Defense", instead of "Department of War".
The rational human mind is completely separate from animals, and plants, and even human bodies. "I think, therefore I am."
I am the master of this realm, and I shall do as I see fit. I'm rational. I can explain. I can make a nice profit, and it is futile and unevolved to resist that.
Great minds think alike. Let's leverage that idea, really scale it up. To make an omelet, you have to break some eggs. Forests grow back.
Here is an article, reviewing a book that says the enlightenment model has been taken too far, that it cast out all prior models, and that we need a new and more-enlightened approach to our places in the web of life that we took for granted in our sprint to subdue it.
This book review says that the forms of society which are fundamental to our (animal) species are our fundamental nature. Abstract reason is not our fundamental nature, not even the actual arbiter of our actions. We do not often act from pure rationality. Maybe we do in a chess game, but it's not rational to play chess, so why do we play chess, with a cigarette, and a Hershey bar... We have spent 400 years being rewarded for using our rational minds to burn forests to drive steam engines to make cloth and replace weavers, then to clean the cotton, then to step foot on the moon, and lately to become cartoon characters in interactive internet porn games. We need self driving cars.
Can we actually synthesize ourselves into healthy humans at all levels of person and family and work-party and garden?
Jenny snapped this picture of me in the kitchen-garden this morning. I'm working on it. It's a full-engagement thing, not just an intellectual exercise.

Eleni sends this story about Steve Bannon's worldview. Don't stop there. Keep reading. It's important, and it is rational and coherent, and he came to it through a lot of life experience. Also, there's a conceptual framework for it. It all falls into place.
"The Fourth Turning" is the reset that happens every four generations, like the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and the Great-Depression/WW-2.
It's that time again. That's his worldview. Alastair Crooke does a credible job of explaining. The title isn't the story.

Paul Craig Roberts tells "Our Age of Folly", which is still this same age of Post WW-2 order, the order which is about to reset. (We suckers never get an even break.) Thanks Eleni.
The United States has been growing progressively insane for a long time. For my generation, the realization descended upon us in the 1960s when the military/security complex convinced Americans that if we permitted Vietnamese nationalist leader Ho Chi Minh to unify Vietnam, the dominoes would fall until the Communist World Revolution had us in its grip.

A burst-height-compensating super-fuse for nuclear warheads just made it 3 times more likely that a US warhead completely takes out a Russian missile silo. One submarine launched nuclear warhead is now almost certain to take out one Russian ICBM silo. That tremendously improves the odds of complete first-strike destruction of offensive weapons and removes the selfish-interest reason not to destroy half the world, for fear of getting singed. Thanks Dan. Important story and easy to miss.
The capability upgrade has happened outside the attention of most government officials, who have been preoccupied with reducing nuclear warhead numbers. The result is a nuclear arsenal that is being transformed into a force that has the unambiguous characteristics of being optimized for surprise attacks against Russia and for fighting and winning nuclear wars.

Half a century after United States B-52 bombers dropped more than 500,000 tonnes of explosives on Cambodia's countryside Washington wants the country to repay a $US500 million war debt. (So, we sent a bunch of agricultural surplus to the corrupt ruler of Cambodia, who we paid off while we bombed most of his people into the stone age. We told him we'd lend him the money if he would buy the corn. It made good pig feed. Everybody wants to eat more pig. Really, it was just a legitimate side deal. Pay Up!, a debt's a debt.)

Senator Rand Paul introduces Congresswoman, Tulsi Gabbard's Stop Arming Terrorists Act in the Senate. (Right-on!)

Philosophical Blood Feuds

Candles in the Wind,

The Archdruid delves into philosophical analysis of perception, consciousness, morality, ethics, human group-belief-systems, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, their clear thoughts, personal foibles, and subtle ambiguity to stimulate introspection.
He takes a pleasant and thoughtful stroll to, "we don’t yet know how to live, and maybe we should get to work figuring that out."

Then there's this look at simulacrum-reality for control of humanity from Diane Johnstone. Thanks Eleni
The amazing adoption in France of the American anti-Russian campaign is indicative of a titanic struggle for control of the narrative – the version of international reality consumed by the masses of people who have no means to undertake their own investigations. Control of the narrative is the critical core of what Washington describes as its “soft power”.  The hard power can wage wars and overthrow governments.  The soft power explains to bystanders why that was the right thing to do.  The United States can get away with literally everything so long as it can tell the story to its own advantage, without the risk of being credibly contradicted...
Intelligence services write the story, and the mass corporate media tell it.

Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov comments that CIA is able to hack refrigerators, and says that he does not take his cellphone to important negotiations.

The Ron Paul Report looks at John Kennedy's war against the Military Industrial Complex (He won important battles for us...)
"Kennedy was at full war against the U.S. national-security establishment. He was challenging all of their Cold War assumptions. He was proposing peaceful coexistence with what the CIA and the military had said was an implacable foe that was determined to take over America. And he was doing the unthinkable — making friends with the Soviet Union (i.e., Russia), Cuba, and the communist world... With his assassination, Kennedy lost the war and the national-security establishment prevailed. They got the continuation of their Cold War. They got their Vietnam War."

Charles Hugh Smith gets to the point: The Conflict Within the Deep State Just Broke Into Open Warfare
The answer is obvious: a CIA with unlimited power and the backing of a corrupt Establishment and media is more than detrimental to America's soft and hard power globally--it is disastrous and potentially fatal to America's interests, standing and influence.

Pepe Escobar looks at the public display of CIA global hacking weapons, and the "Agency" fallback narrative of Putin-the-Antichrist. "Orwellian iPhone" edition.
"So, relax, global citizen; the CIA is benign and benevolent, even when they’re watching you. You have nothing to fear but fear itself – and its name is Russia."

The World Socialist Website expounds further:
The documents reveal that the CIA possesses the ability to exploit and control any internet-connected device, including mobile phones and “smart” televisions. These tools, employed by an army of 5,000 CIA hackers, give the agency the means to spy on virtually anyone, whether inside or outside the United States... Former CIA director Michael Hayden replied to the revelations by boasting, “But there are people out there that you want us to spy on. You want us to have the ability to actually turn on that listening device inside the TV to learn that person’s intentions.”

Stephen Hawking calls for World Government to prevent robot (AI) apocalypse. (I think he always means well, and is probably just represented by dunces again.)
“Since civilisation began, aggression has been useful inasmuch as it has definite survival advantages.”
“It is hard-wired into our genes by Darwinian evolution. Now, however, technology has advanced at such a pace that this aggression may destroy us all by nuclear or biological war. We need to control this inherited instinct by our logic and reason.”
“The real risk with AI isn’t malice but competence... A super intelligent AI will be extremely good at accomplishing its goals, and if those goals aren’t aligned with ours, we’re in trouble."

The AI Economy, why the market never crashes, an open secret:
Some form of A.I. and supercomputer is injecting the system with “printed” money so nothing really fails. I am not just talking about banks. I think, at this point, “regular industry” of a certain size is also getting these magic funds. This is almost the only way to explain how nothing has really failed since 2009. This magic show will go on for as long as the rest of the world still covets our fake monopoly money painted green.

John Helmer (Dances With Bears) explains how the Australian investigators into the MH-17 downing are seriously not convinced that Donetsk separatists with Russian missiles intentionally shot down that civilian aircraft. That is a lot to prove, especially when it just ain't so. Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull is patiently obstructing injustice for now...
"Because the Australians have decided there is no case for a terrorist act to justify compensating their own citizens, the Ukrainians have already lost their case."

35 Countries where the US has supported Fascists, Drug Lords and Terrorists:

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, in an interview with Chinese TV station Phoenix, said U.S. forces in Syria were "invaders" and that he had yet to see "anything concrete" emerge from U.S. President Donald Trump's vow to prioritize the fight against Islamic State.

Russian President Putin and Turkish President Erdogan had a very friendly, productive, cooperative and promising meeting on Friday. It appears that there is now genuine trust at all levels, and the countries are able to fully cooperate militarily, diplomatically and economically. Major point of agreement stressed is territorial integrity of Syria and Iraq, coupled with all parties contributing to fight against "terrorists". ISIS/ISIL/Daesh loses.

The Syrian Arab Army and friends have blocked deeper Turkish advances into Syria, and have liberated the water pumping station for Aleppo from ISIS, by attacking rapidly. The booby traps were in place, but were not triggered as ISIS retreated ("Water is life" for bad-guys, too...) 2 million people are about to take showers. Russia and the US seem to be cooperating by putting brightly-flagged forces between Turkish proxy forces and Manbij, held by Syrian Kurdish forces. With their backs protected by US/Russia, Kurdish forces (YPK, SDF, Syrian Democratic Forces) advance towards Raqqa,  the last large Syrian city held by ISIS. These Kurds are obviously expected to pay in blood for a homeland, promised by the US. Will they maintain enough strength to collect on that promise? "500 U.S. special forces (Green Berets) are training and leading the 10,000+ strong SDF proxy force. A small army unit is with them and provides artillery support with two long range MLRS missile systems. Added to these were the Ranger elements seen around Manbij. 400 U.S. Marines (11th MEU) were announced to soon enter the area. They will mostly provide 155mm artillery support and will take care of resupplies. 2,500 soldiers of the 2nd Brigade, 82nd Airborne are currently staging in Kuwait. The U.S. now has four military air fields in the Syrian Kurdish area north-east of the Euphrates."

A UN report has accused Turkish security forces of human rights violations during operations against Kurdish fighters in the country's southeast, drawing an angry response by Turkey which rejected it as "biased".

(Never falsely modest) Elon Musk lays down the offer to put in a 100 megawatt solar utility in Southern Australia in 100 days, or do it for free. That means lots of battery power. When does the "100 days" start? Does he get money up front to make batteries before those 100 days? What are the details that make this bold boast a real wager?

(Fake Nobel) Prize winning economist : “What is not OK is for rent-seekers to get rich,” Deaton said. "All that talent is devoted to stealing things, instead of making things." He favors a single-payer health system only because our current part-private and part-public system is exquisitely designed to give opportunities for rent-seeking. “So I, who do not believe in socialized health-care, would advocate a single-payment system…because it will get this monster that we’ve created out of the economy and allow the rest of capitalism to flourish without the awful things that healthcare is doing to us.”

Which single-payer healthcare model would be best for California? (BETA-testing, folks.)

Hold My Tongue

Freudian Slipping,

"Americans are deploying their tanks, airplanes and special forces battalions along the Russian border. And we are quietly 'seeding' the U.S. shoreline with nuclear 'mole' missiles (they dig themselves in and 'sleep' until they are given the command) Oh, it seems I've said too much. I should hold my tongue." Russian military expert Viktor Baranetz, a retired colonel and former defense ministry spokesman.

What's at Stake in Obama/British coup-attempt against Trump? (Catchy title, looking at US/Turkey/Russia military semi-cooperation in Syria.) Thanks Eleni

Russia in Mediatory role between NATO Allies, US and Turkey in Syria and Iraq (heh, heh, heh) Thanks Eleni.

Here is the key town that is hotly contested by all parties, Manbij. The clamps may not be enough to keep the lid on this pressure cooker. What if Turks kill Americans?

Recent Trump-critic, and institutionalized Russophobe John Huntsman gets Trump's nod for Russian Ambassador, and is preparing to accept it.
He likes Trump this year. How'sabout Russia?

Trump vows "full court press" as opposition to Ryan-Care mounts. (heh, heh, heh... It's not "Trumpcare", heh, heh, heh...)

The Eurozone is no longer threatened by PIIGS. Enter the FIG (France, Italy, Greece) Thanks Eleni. This story has the current calculated odds.

Marine LePen: "I will introduce a new Franc at the rate of one to one with the Euro."

Germany's chief prosecutor will begin investigation into CIA cyber-spy hub in Frankfurt, outed by Wikileaks.

Wikileaks will share hacking secrets with vulnerable tech companies. Nice. Good-neighborly.

Nigel Farage meets with Julian Assange in London's Ecuadorian Embassy.
Farage said he couldn’t remember what he was doing in the building. Asked specifically if he had gone to the Knightsbridge building to meet with Assange, Farage said: “I never discuss where I go or who I see”.

The Hunt for "Snowden-2" begins. The feds have their bloodhounds out for whoever handed this massive data cache to Wikileaks. (Pray for the hero.)

Former AG Loretta Lynch approved Trump wiretap and is going to be subject to prosecution. (not happening yet.) Thanks Eleni.
