Eating to Live,
We continue to see that as the finances of nations become tighter and more strained, the competition for resources crystalizes as whether to pay bondholders of national debts fully, or to fund social safety-nets for the citizens of those nations. Creditors have had the upper-hand in this existential contest since the days of the Roman Republic. The hand of lenders was strengthened when nation-states were able to incur war-debts in perpetuity to the citizens. The debts no longer died with the king.
The existential crisis of survival approaches. Financial elites know, and have had ample time to prepare.
Fabio Vighi on financialized artificial-reality, posing as your life: Circular Deals and the Flipped Pyramid - How Finance Captures the Future
From share buybacks to pension fund algorithms, Nvidia’s AI ecosystem reveals how financialization forces ordinary savings to underwrite its own speculative survival. For most of the past five centuries, finance was attached to production. Money was invested in goods and services, which generated returns, which were then reinvested. Capital had to pass through production (through the exploitation of labour power and the sale of commodities) before it returned as more money. Financial speculation existed, of course — it is as old as the Venetian bankers of the thirteenth century. But it was an appendix; a parasite, perhaps, but one that fed off a host.
Over the last half a century that relationship has reversed. Today, especially in the United States and across the West, financial capital no longer sits at the top of a pyramid built on factories, shops, and wages. The pyramid has been turned upside down. Financial markets — the abstract, obscure trade in securities, derivatives, and repurchase agreements — are now the foundation on which economic life (production, services, consumption) rests. Money begets money without having to pass through circulation, and the reproduction of society is dragged along behind.
This is why financial crises are now economic crises tout court. When the markets seize up, credit freezes. When credit freezes, businesses cannot pay their workers. When workers go unpaid, they stop buying goods. When goods go unsold, more businesses fail. The point to note here is that the real economy does not stand on its own and wait for finance to recover. It is dependent on finance, like a terminal patient on life support...
..A system supposed to allocate capital to productive uses has morphed into a system in which productive activity must be continuously subsidised by financial expansion... Today, Nvidia’s share buyback programme offers perhaps the purest illustration of this logic; a case study in how financial engineering at the top of the inverted pyramid determines whether the people at the bottom can count on the future they were promised...
..If the loop breaks — if Microsoft, Alphabet, or Meta cut back their spending on AI infrastructure because the returns are not what they hoped — then the cash dries up, the buybacks become impossible to sustain, and the share price falls. Because Nvidia is so deeply woven into every major index, that fall would drag down the entire market, and the losses would land on retirement portfolios around the world. At that point, hundreds of billions of dollars spent buying back shares at peak prices would turn out to have been value destroyed, not value stored. And the people who would pay for it are not Nvidia’s executives, but the savers whose pension funds were locked into the trade by design...
..Economic power is everywhere, and therefore nowhere in particular: it cannot be isolated, located, or addressed. You are free to argue about anything in a modern, liberal democratic setting — indeed, you are told that this is what freedom means — but the logic of capital itself is not up for debate; not because it is censored, but because any debate already presupposes it... As an unquestionable premise, financialised capital closes every potential political opening. It does not answer any question. Instead, it removes the place from which a question could be asked. https://fabiovighi.substack.com/p/circular-deals-and-the-flipped-pyramid
Dutch banking indebted Englanders forever, to wage wars. Curro Jimenez, Unrest Across Europe Is the Result of the Collapse of the Social Contract
The student protests in France are set to reach a new height on October 17. That date will see not only students in the streets, but other social sectors as well, alongside a possible return of the “yellow vests”. It is not only France that is stirred by protests, but Belgium, Spain, Germany, Italy, and Greece as well. These protests are a result of what we analyzed a year ago: the social contract in Europe is breaking down.....Through these protests, we are witnessing the consequences of the breakdown of the social contract that has underpinned the organization of society in Western Europe for well over a century. The current form of social welfare that is—or was—characteristic of Western Europe emerged after the end of World War II. However, some of its elements date to the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th, such as the old-age pension system, or even further back, as some commentators noted in the article referenced at the beginning.
The conceptualization of the state as a guarantor of well-being, at least as a last resort, has to be linked to the rise of the state as the expression of popular sovereignty. If the state represents the “will of the people,” then the purpose of the state is not only to protect, but also to provide for the people. This is perhaps the basic logic that justifies the emergence of the welfare state from the nation-state, a paradigmatic European creation, and the which regulates the relationship between power and the individual... ..Together with this process, which leads on the one hand to philosophical and scientific materialism and on the other to secularized politics (the separation of church and state), there is the emergence of a financial system that propels central banking, commercial banking, and fiat currency. This financial system did not emerge fully formed; it evolved, as did political systems, toward its current form. Despite more orthodox readings that locate the beginning of the nation-state at the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 and its crystallization in the French Revolution in 1789, I believe that there is an equally important event in the foundation of the Bank of England in 1694. Similar to how the French Revolution became the fusion of the concept of nation and state—meaning citizens owe allegiance to the state because it represents the will of the nation, and not merely the crown—the foundation of the Bank of England merged the bank and the state by establishing a system of state borrowing, standardized national debt, and fractional-reserve banking. This occurred during the reign of William III, himself of Dutch origin, who integrated Dutch-style public credit instruments into England while authorizing a fractional-reserve lending model... .. All the protests happening across different parts of Europe seek to force the government to act. It is reasonable to do so when the government claims to be the ultimate sovereign, and, theoretically, it is. However, the structural changes causing the worsening of living conditions and the questioning of the nature of the social contract are not merely political; in many cases, they lie outside of what is considered the political sphere today... ..Citing the article linked above, written by Greg Palast: “The euro would really do its work when crises hit, Mundell explained. Removing a government’s control over currency would prevent nasty little elected officials from using Keynesian monetary and fiscal juice to pull a nation out of recession. “It puts monetary policy out of the reach of politicians,” he said. “[And] without fiscal policy, the only way nations can keep jobs is by the competitive reduction of rules on business.” He cited labor laws, environmental regulations and, of course, taxes. All would be flushed away by the euro. Democracy would not be allowed to interfere with the marketplace – or the plumbing.” If we take this into account, alongside other geopolitical factors—such as the proxy war that NATO is waging against Russia at the behest of the U.S., or the financial system’s inertia toward central bank digital currencies—it is hard to see what national governments can really do in order to respond to the demands of their citizens. It is the financial and geopolitical components of the system that are jeopardizing the meaning of the social contract, but they are, for the moment, outside the reach of Western European governments. https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2026/10/unrest-across-europe-is-the-result-of-the-collapse-of-the-social-contract.html
Ugo Bardi, Famines: Are They Predictable?
Would scientific models have helped to stave off the disaster of the Great Irish Famine? A new paper examines the question The models in the World3 family tend to show population peaking much earlier than the cohort-based models, somewhere between 2030 and 2060. In some scenarios, the decline afterward is fast: 0.5–2% per year. That’s the Seneca shape: slow growth, rapid decline. System Dynamics model can generate the abrupt cliff that demographic models cannot see. https://senecaeffect.substack.com/p/famines-are-they-predictable
Moon of Alabama, War Against Yemen Endangers Saudi Crown Prince’s Position
In the 1930s, during the formation of Saudi Arabia, three provinces were taken from Yemen. The Yemeni have always wanted them back. They are now in a position where they may eventually achieve that aim...
..There is no one who expects the Saudis to win in this conflict. Saudi allies are reluctant to join the conflict. Turkey and Pakistan, which have signed defense agreements with bin Salman, are unwilling to fight in Yemen. The U.S. is delivering intelligence reports but is too short of ammunition to join the war. Local Saudi mercenaries in Yemen are in disarray and unwilling to fight the superior forces of Ansar Allah.
Unless Mohammad bin Salman is willing to file for peace with Yemen the war will escalate into a larger and longer conflict. Yemeni ground forces are likely to soon enter the former Yemeni provinces in southern Saudi Arabia. Further strikes of Saudi airports will diminish its international reputation. More attacks on its oil installation will lower its income.
Bin Salman’s role is not as secured as it seems to be. After he had gained the crown prince position he had imprisoned tribal leaders and competing family members. He has liberalized the country against the will of its deeply conservative establishment. His many failed vanity projects have cost a lots of money with little to show for it.
Iran has offered to mediate a peace agreement between Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
It is unlikely that Mohammad bin Salman is willing to engage in it even though it is probably the best and only way for him to stay in his position.

I had influenza last week: Can You Trust CDC’s Flu Vaccine Effectiveness Estimates? Epidemiologist Says No
Every year, the CDC estimates how effective last year’s flu vaccine was at preventing flu-related symptoms and hospitalizations. But Dr. Eyal Shahar, a professor emeritus of epidemiology at the University of Arizona’s Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, says those estimates can’t be trusted — because the CDC uses what he says is an inherently biased study design to arrive at those estimates.
A Midwestern Doctor, The Fraud That Launched the mRNA Era
A forensic audit of Pfizer's trial data, newly released Argentine regulatory documents, and what they reveal about the "safe and effective" claim the entire mRNA platform rests upon Before COVID, mRNA had failed for decades and both companies developing it were in financial trouble. However, an emergency framework built years in advance made it possible to rush their vaccines to market. Now there is a major push to replace much of the vaccine schedule with lucrative mRNA vaccines, despite the platform being immensely problematic and still poorly understood.
The mRNA platform’s acceptance rests on the claim that its trials proved it “safe and effective,” yet the same tactics routinely used to rig clinical trials were used throughout them, from the misleading “95% effective” figure to injured participants having their injuries recoded as unrelated conditions.
Using trial data released by court order, a team of independent researchers and whistleblowers spent years auditing Pfizer’s trial. Within the limited records procured, extensive irregularities were documented throughout the trials including 1,203 participants vanishing from the records, 1,209 adverse events re-filed as COVID symptoms, undisclosed deaths in the vaccine group, unequal COVID testing between the groups, and the public receiving a more dangerous formulation of the vaccine which was never tested prior to being released. https://www.midwesterndoctor.com/p/the-fraud-that-launched-the-mrna
