Navigating Life,
I will attend a 6 day silent-meditation retreat starting tomorrow, 11/19/24 at midday, so I will probably not post to the blog for the rest of this week.
The retreat concludes Sunday 11/24/24, but I will certainly be behind on news at that point. If we enter nuclear war I might be oblivious to that development.
It might seem odd to open with another assessment of peak-energy-resources when there is another, potentially nuclear, escalation in the US/NATO proxy-war against Russia, in Ukraine, but it is an important inflexion point in global economy, therefore global finance, and therefore global-war-emergencies to keep established elites in power through a vast financial reset. Many of us believe that it is the time to change the staffing at the imperial court, and to relinquish imperialism altogether...
Our global economy is primarily powered by middle-distillates of Diesel fuel and bunker fuel (for shipping), which are about 35% of what comes out of a barrel of oil when it is fractionated. There is also asphalt for roads, gasoline for cars and kerosine for jet fuel, but Diesel and bunker fuel are critical, especially diesel for all heavy machinery, big trucks and trains. This is what critically supports modern industrial economy. There is no substitute. There can be no real substitutes overall. More energy intensive processes can "crack" Diesel out of heavy tar sands from Canada, and Venezuelan heavy crude, but these are already extremely energy intensive to produce, with EROI of 3:1 or so, when modern industrial economy needs an aggregate EROI of above 12:1 in order to persist at its current level of complexity.

Oil Man Art Berman, This Is How Oil Ends (Our current oil production plateau won't likely persist past 2030, if that)
The era of cheap oil ended two decades ago, when the average price jumped from $35 in the 1990s to over $90 since 2000. The peak oil movement understood that part but missed how long debt could delay the inevitable decline in oil use. It’s still uncertain whether this will play out as peak oil, peak plateau, or peak demand. One thing, however, is certain: the future that peak oil warned about 20 years ago is here. And no matter how it unfolds, economic growth is heading for a serious reckoning.
It looked like the world might be running out of affordable oil during the first 15 years of this century. Prices hit $190 per barrel in 2008, adjusted for today’s dollars, and averaged nearly $150 from 2011 to late 2014 (Figure 1). Then the shale plays came online, and to many, peak oil seemed like a false alarm. https://www.artberman.com/blog/this-is-how-oil-ends/
Gail Tverberg point out that we may be in post-peak-affordable-uranium, too, as we have been using up decades of highly-enriched nuclear-warhead uranium in our reactors for 20 years. Nuclear electricity generation has hidden problems; don’t expect advanced modular units to solve them.
What I see is that the relatively “flat” overall nuclear electricity production has been accomplished, to a significant extent, by the “Advanced Economies, ex US” dropping back in their use of nuclear electricity at close to the same time the “Later Entrants” have rapidly been increasing their use of nuclear electricity. The Later Entrants can make goods for sale in international markets much more cheaply than the Advanced Economies, ex US through their efficient use of cheap energy (often from coal) and their lower wages. This more efficient approach gives the Later Entrants an “edge” in buying the uranium that is available.
I expect to see more of this pattern of squeezing out in the future. In fact, new and recently re-opened nuclear plants will need to compete existing nuclear generation units for available uranium. Given the way squeezing out takes place, very few people will realize that there is a problem with uranium fuel. It will just be that leaders of some parts of the world, as well as some parts of the US, will start emphasizing stories about how dangerous nuclear energy is. Instead of nuclear, they will emphasize electricity generation from wind and solar and allow these approaches to “go first” when they are available. The result will be wholesale electricity prices that will be far too low for nuclear power plants, much of the time. It will be these low wholesale electricity prices that push nuclear power out.
Thus, unless there truly are breakthroughs in recycling spent fuels, or in uranium mining, electricity generation using nuclear energy may gradually slip away from many parts of the world currently using it. https://ourfiniteworld.com/2024/11/11/nuclear-electricity-generation-has-hidden-problems-dont-expect-advanced-modular-units-to-solve-them/
John Leake, On Trump Derangement Syndrome, The anthropology and psychology of an obsession.
During the first presidency of Donald J. Trump this syndrome became so virulent that it created a strangely binary posture in public affairs. If Trump expressed even mild enthusiasm for a policy, person, or thing, his opposition automatically rejected it. To be sure, Trump often threw gasoline on the fire with his bombastic personal style and occasional buffoonery. The qualities that had once been viewed as showman’s schtick were widely deemed unacceptable in a US President. The court jester had become king, and it drove the lords and ladies at court mad.
As anthropologists and psychologists have long understood, humans are hyper social and tribal. Stanford Professor Rene Girard has pointed out that during times of stress and rivalry, we are inclined to ascribe blame not to a complex state of affairs, but to a particular person or group. Persistent problems and misfortunes build up negative psychic energy, which generates a collective yearning to destroy the person or persons on whom the blame is heaped. This process of scapegoating is amplified by what Professor Girard called mimesis—that is, imitation—the tendency to embrace an opinion or sentiment because everyone in a preferred group is embracing it. In trying to make sense of the world, we often look to those around us for cues to guide us in our perceptions and opinions. https://petermcculloughmd.substack.com/p/on-trump-derangement-syndrome Scott Ritter has a long tale of his own blackmail & abuse from the FBI. Why Matt Gaetz Matters
The FBI terrorizes innocent Americans daily for the “crime” of saying things their political masters object to.
Matt Gaetz was investigated by the FBI regarding the allegations that are the subject of the House Ethics Committee report.
The FBI did not press charges.
Matt Gaetz has promised to hold the FBI and Department of Justice to account for the crimes they have committed against him.
For the crimes they have committed against President Trump.
For the crimes that they have committed against the American people.
For the crimes they have committed against me.
You see, it is personal.
Not just for those who have been directly caught up in the abuses committed by the FBI and DOJ.
But for all Americans.
The FBI and DOJ, as they are currently organized and operated, are an insult to us all.
They are an affront to the Constitution.
Matt Gaetz wants to hold them to account.
And we should do everything possible to give him the chance to do just that by supporting his nomination as Attorney General. https://scottritter.substack.com/p/why-matt-gaetz-matters

..Regrettably, we are witnessing a replay of what occurred the first time Donald Trump was elected, back in November 2016. The reaction of the Obama administration was to use the couple of months before handover of power to sabotage the most salient aspect of his intended foreign policy initiative, to normalize relations with Russia...
..Just over two months ago, this very question of allowing Kiev to fire missiles using US technology on strikes deep inside the Russian Federation had been vetoed by Biden when it was proposed to him by visiting UK Prime Minister Starmer. That refusal followed by a day a direct threat from Vladimir Putin that the use by Kiev of medium range missiles supplied by nuclear powers in the West for such attacks on Russia would make the providers of those missiles co-belligerents. We said then that the Pentagon had prevailed upon the President to take the threat seriously and to decline to give his permission to the British, so that Starmer went home empty-handed. What has happened to change the thinking in the Oval Office? There can be no doubt that Donald Trump’s victory on 5 November and the clear indications that he will cut American aid to Ukraine and push for a negotiated settlement of the war on terms acceptable to Moscow has enraged the Neocons who hold the Collective Biden in their thrall. The flip-flop on use of such missiles is a testament to the utter irresponsibility of this administration. It calls for an urgent move in Congress to stop an action that is tantamount to a declaration of war on Russia. https://gilbertdoctorow.com/2024/11/17/joe-biden-one-foot-in-the-grave-and-he-wants-to-take-the-rest-of-us-with-him/

Moon of Alabama, To Prolong The War In Ukraine U.S. Allows ATACMS Use On Russia
President Joe Biden, or whoever is thinking for him, is doing his best to make peace in Ukraine less likely:Putin has warned that Moscow could provide long-range weapons to others to strike Western targets if NATO allies allow Ukraine to use their arms to attack Russian territory...
..The ATACMS missiles Ukraine had so far been allowed to fire, mostly against Crimea, have been carriers of cluster ammunition with a reach of some 160 kilometer.
We do not know yet if the new authorized use for ATACMS munition on targets within Russia is only the relevant for cluster ammunition missile type or for high explosive ATACMS missiles with a reach of 300 kilometer.
However, the Russian President Vladimir Putin has correctly pointed out that ANY use of ATACMS requires the involvement of NATO (U.S/UK) assets for acquiring the targeting data and for planning and programming the missile's mission. https://www.moonofalabama.org/2024/11/us-to-allow-atacms-use-on-russia-to-prolong-war-in-ukraine.html#more
The Kremlin has issued an initial response to widespread reports in US media saying that the Biden administration will now allow Ukraine to target Russia with US-supplied long-range missiles. Kremlin top spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that this would unleash a "significant new round of escalation" in the war if it proves true, but he also cautioned that Moscow authorities had yet to see official confirmation directly from the White House.
"If such a decision has indeed been formulated and communicated to the Kyiv regime, it marks a significant escalation and a fundamentally new stage in terms of U.S. involvement in this conflict," Peskov said...
..Those same articles told us that the United States government considered the introduction of North Korean troops into the battle to represent a big escalation in the war by the Kremlin...
..US news sources tell us this morning that Washington has insisted that Kiev strike with ATACMS only targets within the Kursk oblast, supporting the notion that the objective is strictly a proportional tit-for-tat over the North Korean presence there. Indeed, if the Russians' version of how such weapons are used, namely that all preparation and targeting is done by U.S. soldiers or U.S. military contractors, whatever strikes on Russia using ATACMS Kiev may claim, real control rests with Americans so they know very well what will be hit and where.
Let us put aside for the moment that the limitation on geography for attack is only temporary and will be expanded in the near future whenever Washington is ready to up the ante. Let us be explicit about what attacking the Kursk region means.
There are only two possible types of targets in Kursk oblast worthy of discussion. One is troop concentrations of Russians and North Koreans performing the mopping up operation in Kursk. ATACMS strikes there probably will not initially force the Russians to respond. The second is the nuclear power plant in the region which was believed to be the prize initially sought by Kiev when it began its incursion. Let us remember that the Kursk nuclear power plant is an early type plant which has no protective concrete dome over it to contain radioactive leaks and to prevent missile strikes from disabling it. Accordingly, an ATACMS strike on the plant will likely create a big, even devastating leak of radioactive particles across the region, meaning predominantly on Russian territory. Such an eventuality would force the hand of Putin to respond with a nuclear attack, likely on the Continental United States...
Biden's 'Unnecessary Escalation' Only Sets Trump Up for Failure - Ex-DoD Analyst

The Politico article strikes the same note, essentially arguing that Trump will be doing the West a huge favor by saving them from their own self-wrought unwinnable catastrophe. According to them, Kiev secretly knows that Trump is a better option than Harris because Trump is more likely to get a deal ‘favorable to Ukraine’ from Putin, whereas Harris and co. would have just prolonged the slaughter indefinitely, keeping to this waffling noncommittal track.

..I am obliged to say what significance I see in the entry of North Korean soldiers on Russian Federation territory and possibly their deployment in Kursk.
I agree with Washington that this represents an important escalation by the Russians. But it has nothing to do with the war in and about Ukraine. It is a Russian response to U.S. actions in the Far East, where it is mobilizing South Korea and Japan against China in its containment policy there, against North Korea to apply maximum threats against Pyongyang, and ….against Russia in its containment policy on the RF everywhere.
By exercising its rights under the recently ratified mutual defense treaty with North Korea and inviting Pyongyang to move a substantial contingent of fighting men to the Western border of the Russian Federation, Moscow is serving notice on Washington that its own 'sphere of influence,' if I may paraphrase Barack Obama in his widely quoted insult to Putin about his country's place in the world, extends to many, many areas, as should be expected from the world's largest country accounting for 12 percent of the world's land mass. https://gilbertdoctorow.substack.com/p/north-korean-troops-in-kursk-pretext

..Trump takes office in two months and could presumably instantly roll-back Biden’s ‘deep strikes’ authorization, completely negating any effect by limiting their use to a tiny irrelevant time window.
The other thing is that Europe continues to crumble, with Macron having no favor at home, and Germany’s government now lacking a majority, with Scholz on the way out. Ukraine’s future vis-a-vis the mythical ‘European solidarity’ is on quite shaky grounds. Couple this with Russia’s now-resumed ‘Dark Winter’ campaign, and the next few months could be extremely rocky for Ukraine, particularly given the fact that Russia’s advances and territorial captures continue accelerating.
The new strikes authorization is presumably meant to tide Ukrainian societal morale over for a few months, with perhaps some kind of flashy ‘hit’ somewhere, that will be oversold as “devastating” to Russia, but it’s questionable how much mileage they can get even out of that anymore. https://simplicius76.substack.com/p/operation-dark-winter-resumes-as

Anyone who has delved into the supposedly solid headline figures can clearly see the real weakness of the U.S. economy. An unsustainable increase in government spending and federal debt bloated the official GDP, making gross domestic income significantly weaker than headline GDP. Additionally, the Conference Board and University of Michigan consumer confidence readings, well below 2019 and 2021 levels, indicated a stagnant economy. Significant negative revisions and concerning elements were evident in the job reports. The entire improvement of the labor force since 2021 came from foreign workers, and the employment-to-population and labor force participation ratios remained significantly below 2019 levels. Real wages were stagnant in the past four years using official figures. Investment was weak, and the Russell 2000 index, which includes the top small-cap companies generating most of their business in the US, reflected an insignificant 1.8% sales growth and no real earnings growth between 2021 and November 2024...
