Nafeez Ahmed pinpoints our problems perfectly well in his blog in a post titled, “War With Iran, the Planetary Phase Shift, and Global System Paralysis.” We are seeing a war for resources, a mad rush to maintain control over what little is left, at the cost of destroying everything and everyone on the path. Ahmed’s interpretation highlights our powerlessness.....How did we arrive at this? There was a time, after WWII, when the illusory abundance created by cheap fossil fuels made it possible to imagine a future in which peace could be attained by collaboration among the peoples of the world. That it was possible to think that the poor nations could rise to levels of prosperity comparable to those of the rich ones and that everyone would have been happy with that.
The first wrench thrown in the gears of this idea was “The Limits to Growth” report to the Club of Rome, published in 1972. It told us that prosperity wouldn’t last forever. That the world’s economy was going to go through a cycle of growth and decline. That it would start falling like a stone at some moment during the first few decades of the 21st century.
It wasn’t a prophecy of doom. It was a warning... But now that we have entered an age of terrible scarcity of resources, this view has become obsolete...

..It’s perfectly possible that at least some people in some governments understand that growth in the physical economy is inflecting into contraction, and know that we can’t ‘fix’ adverse material trends with monetary gimmickry. Neither can technology over-rule the laws of physics. This gives governments an enormous headache. They can’t – for perfectly good reasons – tell the public that growth is going into reverse, but neither can they expect the public to remain unaware of this reality for much longer.
The extent of this problem has been clarified by the recent extension of the SEEDS forecasting horizon from 2040 to 2050. Globally, material economic prosperity is likely to be about 21% smaller in 2050 than it is today, making the World’s average person 35% poorer. Meanwhile, the real costs of necessities can be expected to carry on rising.....Though some economies are set to fare better than others, the common theme is a reduction in the ability to afford discretionary (non-essential) products and services...
..A full review of “solutions of quality” is beyond the compass of a single article, but some obvious examples can be cited. One such is a move towards greater circularity. We can’t expect to recycle all of the natural resources embedded in relinquished products and artefacts – not least because recycling itself requires energy – but we can do far better than we’ve done so far. The need here is to incorporate eventual recycling into product design from the outset, at the same time as improving the ability to repair as part of a broader extension of product lives.
This points towards a new business model in which intelligent physical engineering re-takes ground previously lost to “financial engineering”...

Beyond encouraging and enabling these positive trends, governments need to recognize that, whilst they’re unable to deliver improvements in the “standard of living” of the citizen, they can certainly improve his or her quality of life.

Marx and his ideological descendants knew communism would never work in 19th and 20th century unless it was forced onto the people. From Marx’s point of view, Democritus and Epicurus provided a clear, deterministic path toward a utopia of collective happiness, with him on the hedonistic throne, as philosopher king. It was a no-brainer for Marx, but nobody else could see his vision.
Marx realized there was only one way to force the people to appreciate his vision: Through the gates of hell, by revolution.
By analyzing the ancient philosophers that Marx examined in his PhD, we come to understand the thought processes underpinning Marxism. The best outcome for humanity was a material, deterministic and atheistic world; a communal utopia where collective happiness is a function of collective struggle. This would be a world which seeks to maximize the pleasures on offer with wanton abandon...
..The question was how he could convince the world to begin the transition towards communism. This is where Marx utilized his studies at Berlin under the mentorship of Bruno Bauer, a Young Hegelian. Bruno taught Marx, in between their drinking escapades, the virtue of Hegel’s “dialectical idealism”. In this, warfare and radicalization go hand in hand. Radicalizing involved marginalizing a small group to become so passionate about a particular idea that they were willing to fight to the death over it. His theory: When two radical ideas clash, war ensues, and may the best idea win.
This was the light bulb moment for Marx. Transformation of society could not happen through an external force, it had to happen from within. A clash of ideas from within a society could provide exactly that; revolution, civil war, and transformation.
