Biotic regulation offers a broader interpretation of both observations: persistence reflects the ecosystem’s capacity to maintain its functioning, while the fertilization response can be viewed as a compensatory response to an imposed change.
This matters beyond nitrogen, phosphorus or Hawaii. We are remarkably poor at stabilizing the systems that we simplify and manage ourselves. Natural ecosystems, in contrast, possess enough complexity to persist and maintain productivity under drastically changing conditions, as long as we do not destroy the living community that makes this regulation possible.
So how will we choose to look at nature? The nutrient limitation principle trains us to look at nature in terms of what it lacks. Biotic regulation suggests a different starting point: what does the living system maintain, and how does it manage to maintain it?
I do not think we can move toward a higher stage of civilization, in harmony with nature, without making this conceptual shift.
